Songs needed!

Let me first say that I am musically inclined. At one point I was playing six different instruments. Yet, somehow I have a complete lack of knowledge of children's music. So, when we were hiking the other day, the only song I could think of to sing was "Happy Birthday." Jia loved it. She sings every word and then switches out whose birthday it is. She also now runs up to people and says, "Happy Birf-day to YOU!"

After multiple renditions of this song in the car, I thought we needed a new one. The only song I could think of was "Show Me the Way to Go Home." I'm sure you know it. It goes like this, "Show me the way to go home. I'm tired and I want to go to bed. I had a little drink about an hour ago and it went right to my head..." Yes, it's an old drinking song about being drunk and having trouble finding your way home from the bar. Entirely inappropriate for a child. Of course, Jia loves it. Thankfully she doesn't get the true meaning yet, but it's embarrassing nevertheless to have her sing it.

We do have children's CDs, but somehow those songs don't stay in my head. I don't know if I want them to really, but I clearly need to do better. Any thoughts are welcome!

How about Splish Splash, I was Taking a Bath or Rubber Ducky, You're the One? I saw some CDs at Creative Kidstuff that looked good...international music type stuff. It's hard to find kid friendly yet adult bearable music. This may be my first time commenting here, but I've been reading for awhile and I really enjoy your blog!

Well, Toby of course won't voluntarily listen to anything but Johnny Cash... (I can burn you a copy of the kid-appropriate mix I made.) The Putamayo Kids CD's are great for international music. There are two--Folk Playground and Sing-A-Long--which have great folk music. There are two good kids' cd's by They Might Be Giants, but their "adult" music is also fun for kids. Toby especially likes "You're not the boss of me." (Surprised?) Good luck! Oh, there is also a new CD of Beatles songs for kids--"All Together Now."

Good luck!

Jane and Joe,

Andrea and I received a gift from a friend in St. Paul of the wonderful CD "Down By The Riverside: An Album Benefiting Reuben Lindh Family Services." It's a project by a bunch of Twin Cities musicians singing traditional folk and children's songs and is a lot of fun. Also, Springsteen's most recent album, "We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions" has a lot of similar songs like "Froggy Went A-Courtin," "John Henry," and "Erie Canal." Then of course there's always the Beatles...
