A Parrot Birthday!
So grateful to the awesome folks at MAARS parrot sanctuary for the
surprise birthday party tonight for Willa! Two kinds of pizza and a New
York fruit tart from Cafe Latte! Volunteering on Tuesday nights at MAARS
is her favorite activity and she could not do it with a better group of
people!

On Nov. 11th, we celebrate both our veterans and our Willa! Veterans,
thank you for your service (esp. my dad)! And to our lovely Willa, happy
golden birthday - 11 on the 11th!

Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest Gorillas
Looking for a magical place that has the loveliest people and the
coolest animals? Visit Uganda! Go to the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to
see the mountain gorillas. Your tourism money helps protect the
endangered gorillas, brings jobs to locals (if you are a very good local
tea picker, you can make $2/day, but if you are a porter for a gorilla
tracker you can make $15-$40/day), better roads, better schools, a
hospital, and more to a very impoverished area. You will track and visit
a gorilla family; our gorilla family had 14 members. Actually, the
magnificent gorillas will come down from the trees and visit you!

Uganda: Ride 4 A Woman
Today we flew to the remote Bwindi Impenetrable Forest where we visited
Ride 4 A Woman, a nonprofit which empowers local women by providing them
with job skills, micro loans, clean water and more. Evelyn, the woman
who started the nonprofit, is an amazing visionary who used her life
experiences as motivation to pursue change so that others did not have
to grow up as she did. In a touching ceremony, we dedicated the cottage
we had built on-site there to support domestic violence victims in honor
of our past Academy president, who was another tireless advocate for
women. Kudos to all the women who raise up other women.
