Seattle

I visited Seattle for a site visit. One of my oldest friends lives there and I got to spend her birthday with her!

I also visited the museum of my favorite contemporary artist, Dale Chihuly. Loved seeing his masterpieces. We also visited the Seattle Art Museum, and stopped by a glass blowing studio where we watched a woman create a beautiful glass horse, and then accidentally drop it!

Heirloom Doll House

Happiness is a doll house that your grandpa built for your mom, filled with treasures that your grandma made and collected.

Cultural Delights

The first day of spring break for the girls (and a comp day for me, yay!) was about cultural delights. We started with semlor at the Swedish Institute and had fun in the Turnblad Mansion as usual. Then we went to United Noodles for tapioca pearls for boba tea, and walked out with a lot more, of course!

Just Love

The girls stole off after dinner and produced this note. Love them.

New Opportunities

I accepted a new job with some lengthy domestic and international travel.  I've made a strong effort to maintain a flexible work schedule these past few years, and have been so happy that I was able to be around for the girls. Recently, an opportunity came my way that was too good to pass up. I'll be helping a lot of people and the girls recognize that. I think this change will be an exciting one for all of us!

One of the perks of the job is that I get to stay at places like the Four Seasons in Santa Barbara. Granted I'll be working, but it's a nice place to do it!

I had a funny telephone conversation with the girls while I was away...
Me: Hi girls! I love you!
Jia: Hi Mama! Where are you?
Me: California.
Jia: Oh! Are you in Sacramento, the capital? (She had to memorize them this year.)
Me: No. I'm in Santa Barbara.
Willa: Did you see Santa?
Me: No, I'm in Santa Barbara. I was in meetings all day.
Willa: You were eating all day? Where was Santa?

And then the conversation deteriorated even further after that. Although I was in meetings all day, I did get to walk on the beach that night.

While on the trip, we went to the gorgeous ranch of Monty Roberts and saw him take an abused rescue horse that had never been ridden and get it to calm down and accept a saddle and rider in less than 30 minutes - just by using body language. His father broke horses the traditional way. It took weeks and he abused them in the process (and abused Monty too), and Monty felt there had to be a better way. It was fascinating how he could predict exactly what the horse would do (now it will drop its head, now it will chew on its tongue...). He was knighted by the Queen for his work with her horses and has fostered 47 kids. An amazing guy.

The Game of Life

Life was the game of choice for family game night tonight. Willa ended up with nine kids! (She was clearly not very safety-conscious with how she fit them into her car.)

The Science of Space

We had a fun day playing and learning all about space at the Science Museum. It is amazing to me that humans will be on Mars in 15 years - and that it takes six months to get there!

Jia's new style

Me to Jia, while getting ready for bed: Did you lay out your clothes for tomorrow?
Jia: Yes. I'm doing that new goth thing. I like it because it's so black and dark and stylish. And I want to dye my hair pink.

That said, I later gave her a bunch of my old t-shirts, and she has been wearing them all! Along with my socks! It's the dawning of a new era.
