Day 5: Mt. Rushmore, Gold Panning and More Burros!

We started the day by going to Mount Rushmore. It was fun to see the heads up close! We walked along the Presidential Trail and enjoyed the views.

Willa and I had this conversation:

Willa: Oh, I could just crawl up and kiss him!
Me: Who?
Willa: Teddy Roosevelt! He made the parks, and the parks are so cool!

We followed up with gold panning at Big Thunder Gold Mine. The girls were helped by Randy, an actual gold prospector who wore a rattlesnake hat, and found lots of treasures!! Each girl found some gold flakes and lots of garnets. Willa collected lots of pyrite. They both also found some beautiful blue and green stones. They filled up their little vials and both declared it, “Awesome!”

In the afternoon, we did the Wildlife Loop Trail because the girls really wanted to feed the burros again.  The burros were off on the prairie, and the girls walked out with their bags of carrots and fed them. The burros then followed them up to the road. We went through three bags of carrots! We saw just a couple bands of buffalo this time. It made us realize how lucky we were to see so many the first time!

We ended the day at our cabin. We ate outside and then made strawberry shortcake over the fire in our cabin fireplace.  We then played lightning tag with glow sticks. I also poured glow stick solution into the girls' bubble wands for glow in the dark bubbles!
