Presidential stuff

Being that we recently celebrated President's Day, we read a book about presidents in Jia's class. It ended by saying "And you could be president someday too!"

Well, the Constitution indicates that Jia can't be president because she wasn't born here. (There is some room for legal debate there, but that is the generally-accepted reading of it. The fact that she's a U.S. citizen makes no difference.)

This provision has bugged me forever because I always thought my sister (who was adopted from Korea) was good presidential material (6th grade class president, senior class president, very active in groups at college, natural leader, etc.). I did some research and found this organization, Equality for Adopted Children, and wanted to share it. They're seeking a constitutional amendment to rectify this issue.

That is so strange b/c I was thinking about the same thing the other day. I will check out the website. I always say that I wouldn't want her to be Pres anyway b/c I couldn't stand watching the news and hearing people talk bad about her...not to mention Dave and Leno LOL

However, I would like her to have the opportunity if she wanted : )

I had never heard of EACH. Sounds like a great organization. I agree. Our girls... and your sister... shouldn't have any restrictions on what they want to be when they grow up!

Gosh, is that really true? I thought that since the readoption process provided our kids with US birth certificates that they were eligible to be president. It's a silly thing to worry about probably - since I hope that Nora will never want the job - but, still, it doesn't seem right.

Thanks for passing along the info!

Interesting. I like the goals of the organization, though I'm not sure their proposed legislation would improve Jia's (or your sister's) chances of being president.

Since the rules are set out in the Constitution, wouldn't a Constitutional Amendment be required to change it? Or having a case brought before the Supreme Court?

Having said that, I just can't imagine The Shmunkin as president. Not when she's walking around her Snow White outfit with Little Red Riding Hood cape, fairy wings, magic wand and tiara.

Then again...who knows what those people do behind closed doors.

You and I think a like girl! I was talking about this to my husband about a month ago. Thanks for the organization link; it gives me more to write my senator about! I agree, the point of the matter is not whether or not they choose to run for president but that they have a choice!
