Then Jia decided to liven it up as usual.
That evening we celebrated with another cake. This time a traditional Chinese one with whipped cream frosting and fruit in and on it.

We then prepared for Willa's "first grab." I was advised by a Taiwanese friend about a first birthday custom, and laid out various items for Willa to peruse. The belief is that whatever she grabs may indicate her future. We included a doll (mother), pen (writer), book (scholar) and a number of other items. For Joe's sake, I laid out a golf ball as well. Joe had saved some golf balls from memorable outings and I decided to take the one which said "79" and not the one that said "accidentally killed mallard." (Didn't want to inadvertently encourage a little hunter.)

What did she instantly grab? The spatula! And she refused to let it go. She hung onto it while playing the rest of the time. Will she be a chef?
She grabbed the pen later and chewed on it for a moment too (while hanging onto the spatula for dear life). Perhaps she'll pen a cookbook or two?

I love the first pic of you and the girls...sooo sweet! I have heard of the "grab" for their first bday and love that Willa grabbed the spatula. We need a great asian chef on tv...another Rachel Ray maybe? : ) She is a doll!
What a great picture of the three of you. That one needs to be displayed in Joe's office.
What a neat tradition. Happy Belated Birthday to your future chef!
HAHA! Love the spatula in the mouth photo, of course. :)
Happy Birthday Willa. I can't believe you are a 1 already. Time flies.
I love doing the birthday tray. We always need excellent chefs.
Happy Birthday sweet girl.
Love the photo of mama and her girls. So beautiful.
Happy birthday, Willa! What a pretty cake, and love the picture of the three of you together.
HA!! What a fun tradition!! Love that she grabbed the spatula. :)
What a fun tradition!!! I think "Chef Willa" has a real ring to it!
I wish we would have done this for Eiley. I think she wants to be a dentist - every morning she demands her own piece of floss to floss her 8 teeth with while I floss mine :-) (I have more than 8, though!)
So cute! Maybe you do have a lil' chef on your hands! Good news for Mommy!
