China, Day 9: Beijing

We are joining a heritage tour of China with other adoptive families. The tour starts tomorrow so we had the day to ourselves to explore Beijing.

We wandered around our neighborhood. It's an interesting mix of high-end stores with a huge, new mall surrounded by tiny, older shops and next to a large pedestrian-only street market.

At the street market, all the food vendors shouted the same thing at us, "HELLO! BEER!" Available snacks included starfish, scorpion or seahorse. The scorpions were still wiggling on their sticks.

The girls had their portraits done there. It was quite the experience. Large crowds gathered at times. We fanned ourselves to keep cool. At one point, a man took a picture of me fanning myself, and then came over and positioned my arm and the fan for a better shot. Willa whispered, "Creepy!" and I laughed at how ridiculous it was. We are getting lots of overt stares from people who are trying to figure out why we are together. The girls don't seem to mind.

More mango shaved ice from Ice Monster in the mall!

Some much needed pool time after a very, very hot day.

Happy Father's Day to Joe and my dad - two of the best dads around!
